PolkeyCollins Associates have worked closely with LIVES to provide an inspirational flagship building that elevates shared experience across all user groups – something key to the culture and values of LIVES. It is the intent to give all users the same access and experience of the building as a one team approach with the mindset of being prepared and ready, just as their volunteers are across Lincolnshire. The client’s brief for the building is for it to lead training of national excellence and as such making it one of only a handful of specialist facilities around the world.

The Brief

To provide an inspirational flagship building that can accommodate the immediate demands of LIVES as they continue to evolve. Inspiring visitors and staff alike in promoting the objective of the charity to provide exceptional training on a local, regional, national, and international stage.

Defining the site

Serving as a centre of excellence, Project Lifesaver must be able to provide an offer that can compete and collaborate with other centres across the world. The facility must also work on a national scale, accommodating requirements of national organisations that require access to specialist facilities and the level of training available at this location.

The language used on the site also reflects these ties, the geographic expanse of county coverage is transposed onto the site to provide four quadrants. The level of development can then also reference to other county relevant ‘event points’ notably hospital locations and the current LIVES location in Horncastle.

Finally, but possibly most importantly, is the link back to the local communities. From the new base, the reach of LIVES will be county wide and give a centralised facility for the service.

Concept Integrated into mesh frontage

We intend to create the feeling of being prepared, being on edge and alert for something to happen. The intention is to generate this feeling early on through our conceptual language , and draw the user centrally where the design language will transcend into the internal working. The mesh offers versatility through edgy, harsh and distinctive forms with the option to explore the use of colour.

“Our vision proposes a centre that provides training to our amazing and dedicated volunteers, but also to anyone who is interested in learning lifesaving skills. From local school children who can learn basic CPR to Healthcare professionals across the country who wish to expand their skills in trauma care ''

Nikki Cooke, CEO at LIVES, speaking to the Lincolnite 2022.
